Released: 01 July 2008

Final judging in the Rathbones Summer Exhibition will take place on 7 July and the winning entries will be displayed to the public in the landmark Port of Liverpool Building from 8 - 18 July. Over 170 entries were received for the Exhibition and will be judged by a panel of high profile figures in the Liverpool arts and business scene.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 11am – 3pm on weekdays 8 – 18 July; there will be no charge for admission. Visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite exhibit to win the ‘People’s Choice Award’.

Rathbones launched the Summer Exhibition in support of the 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations in Liverpool to showcase the creativity of Liverpool’s schools. Exhibits have been submitted by pupils from a range of local secondary schools representing a range of artistic mediums from the written word and painting, to textiles, sound, film and computer graphics.

The judging panel have been unanimous in their praise for the quality of the entries form. Loyd Grossman commented on the standard of the work as being of “very high quality”, while Mike McCartney enthused that the exhibition was a “fascinating, different assortment of ideas from art to sculpture, to dance to ......kids cake!”. Margi Clark added that “the standard of the students’ work is fantastic and more than tells the 'gem stories' of Liverpool's culture”.

Judging panel: Wirral’s Cultural Ambassador Mike McCartney, Loyd Grossman, Judy Thomas of Liverpool Biennial, actress Margi Clark, international singer Jennifer John, winner of television’s Project Catwalk, Kirsty Doyle, and Andy Pomfret, Chief Executive of Rathbone Brothers Plc (Rathbones) have recently judged the exhibits and the overall winner will receive a cash prize of £500. There will also be two theme winners and prizes for those entries which were highly commended, as well as a people’s choice award. A number of prizes have kindly been donated by Casio, Practika and Mlode.

Notes for editors – Specialist Schools and Academies Trust

There are currently over 2,600 specialist schools and 46 open academies, 85% of all maintained schools in England. They are specialising in teaching the arts, business & enterprise, engineering, the humanities, languages, mathematics & computing, music, science, sports, vocational subjects, and technology. The Government’s aim is that by 2010 all schools will be specialist or academies.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust is the lead body for the specialist schools and academies programmes and supports networks of schools focussed on raising attainment and education innovation. The Trust seeks to give more young people access to a good secondary education by facilitating the sharing of best practise in schools. It operates on the principle of ‘by schools for schools’ and is at the heart of a growing affiliated network of over 3,000 schools including primary, secondary, specialist schools, academies and international schools.

It works to give practical support to the transformation of secondary education in England by building and enabling a world-class network of innovative, high performing secondary schools in partnership with business and the wider community. The Trust represents possibly the largest network of its kind in the world and is an independent, not-for-profit organisation funded through a combination of fees and charges, business sponsorship and government grant.
